22 iWise Activities to Make a Positive Difference
- Have a family meeting to talk about screen media use
- Watch “Social Dilemma” together as a family and discuss.
- Conduct a screen use assessment. (Who’s using what, when, why?)
- Complete a digital device inventory. (Locate all the ways the Internet can be accessed in your home)
- Explore your online footprint. (Google yourself!)
- Install/activate content filtering. (Look to your internet service/cell phone provider)
- Remove screens from bedrooms. (Perhaps THE most important)
- Co-view media rather than isolate. (Watch/play together and discuss)
- Have daily screen-free times/activities (e.g., meals, family time)
- Be aware of your own use and modify as needed. (Use monitor apps and set phone limits.)
- Create & utilize a family device charging station for overnight parking.
- Enable parental controls.
- Lookup, review, and preview potential media before approving consumption.
- Have regular, ongoing “Tech Talk” discussions about screentime (it’s constantly changing).
- Create a Family Media Use plan together as a family.
- Establish a healthy media diet (Differentiate un/healthy consumption)
- Practice refusal skills
- Do a Digital Detox
